Teachers' Favorite Video Games

By Jack Derum

Imagine you are playing Madden NFL against other people and your opponent has the username of “I-am-a-teacher.”

Wait, teachers don’t play video games. Or do they?

The Churchill Post decided to find out and ask teachers at our school. Here’s what we found.

Mrs. Pratt: Plants vs. Zombies

Mrs. Pratt, the world studies/U.S. history teacher loves to play Plants vs. Zombies because “it is pretty simple but it’s also strategic.” She said that when it comes to strategy, you have to plan your defenses carefully and choose the right plants for the right location.

“It is what it is,” she said. “I’ve got an old brain and so I don’t need to worry about a million worlds” found in new video games.

It is very easy to figure out, too, which in her opinion makes it all around more likeable.

Mrs. Myers: Trivia Crack and Wordscapes

Mrs. Myers, the 6th grade English teacher, loves Trivia Crack because it keeps her brain sharp. She also likes it because it is just so fun to play. With Wordscapes, she likes it for the challenge. The game is also a way for her to practice spelling and learn new words.

Mrs. Baguley: Frogger

The goal of Frogger is to help the frog cross the street.

This is an old Atari game that Mrs. Baguley played on a Gameboy, so you may not know what it is. In this game, you try to get the frogs across the street safely. The drama/advisory teacher doesn’t play this video game anymore, but when she did play this was her favorite.

She said that this game was more for fun, not as competitive as say Fortnite or Apex.

“Video games right now are too complex and they’re taking up kids’ energy instead of being outside,” she said.

Gameboy games “didn’t take up 5 hours of your day. It didn’t take up your sleep time. It was just for fun.

“I wish games were more for fun and not so serious.”

Mrs. Taylor (Music Teacher): Mario Kart

Mrs. Taylor loves to play the Nintendo game Mario Kart. She loves the speed of it. And she loves “beating my son. The last couple times he’s been outplaying me.”

In the end, the thing she loves the most about it is getting to hang out with her kid.

Mr. Peterson

Mr. Peterson, the vice principal loves to play Halo 1 (the original one) on the original Xbox. He also loves to play Madden NFL or NCAA College Football on the Playstation 3. He doesn’t like a lot of the newer video games because of the complexity of them.

“I’m a little bit old school, I don’t get into too many of the bang, bang, beat em’ up games like Fortnite. It’s just too complicated for me.”

He said he just likes the simple and fun type of games.

Mrs. Chester

Mrs. Chester, the 8th grade English teacher, will play Disney Princess games with her little nieces, who are about 3 and 5. Like other teachers, she also plays Mario Kart, and Plants vs. Zombies

She’s tried Fortnite but doesn’t really like it. “It’s no princess game,” she said with a laugh.

She plays several puzzle games like Tetrus, 1010! And Two Dots. And of course the English teacher likes word games like Wordscapes and Words with Friends, “because I’m a geek.”

Mr. LeRoy

The principal doesn’t play video games. He has a 7th-grade son who plays Fortnite and Apex Legends. “I try and play with him and I just can’t. My thumb and brains don’t connect correctly.”
